cycle of panic attacks and increasing anxiety

Panic attacks and increasing anxiety.

The cycle of panic attacks and increasing anxiety that feeds panic attacks is one that is very difficult to break out of. It quickly becomes out of control, with your body feeding negative signals to your mind, which in turn misinterprets the symptoms for something more sinister and thus increases the levels of anxiety, leading to the spiral of panic attack.

This normally begins following your first panic attack, which heightens your body and mind sensitivity through increasing the fear of a further attack. This increased sensitivity as I said increases you level of anxiety, what follows is now initially beyond the control of many people as they start to experience their second, third or even greater number of attacks. You become stuck in the cycle of panic attacks and increasing anxiety.

Your perception of events changes. You start to think along the following lines: -

"I'm feeling very anxious so I must be under threat of something happening to me".

What happens next is that your body starts to prepare you for danger, the first natural trigger of this being the release of adrenalin, a hormone which enables you to run faster or temporarily muster greater strength to deal with the 'unknown danger'. The adrenalin and a cocktail of other hormones are released, they also speed up your heart rate ready for action.

What happens now?

Yes, your mind takes over and interprets the increase in heart rate and pins and needles, caused by the flow of blood to areas your body anticipates will need it most, as an oncoming panic attack. Now comes the cycle of panic attacks and increasing anxiety.  This causes a downward circle of thoughts and bodily sensations, one increasing and amplifying the other until they get out of control and you feel in the middle of a fully blown panic attack.

Breaking this cycle is not easy for you. You are not alone in this quandary, this is the cycle of panic and increasing anxiety that millions who suffer panic attacks find themselves in. You must however do something about it, find out more to enable yourself to deal with the situation, it feels difficult but millions have conquered it, you can too.
